What better thing is there in life than good health? You have probably heard this saying since you were a child but you did not paid much attention to it. You grew up and had the normal adolescent diseases and are now an adult living your life to the fullest.
Today it is very difficult to maintain a completely healthy lifestyle. We are so busy juggling our many different demands that we often neglect our own health in the process. We take care of our children, our elderly parents, work all day, participate in the children’s outside sports and manage our own homes. There are never enough hours in the day to ensure that we actually take the time to take care of our own health. We are always putting ourselves last and we do not eat healthy foods, exercise regularly or get enough sleep.
When it comes to your health, you are the only person that can make the decision to take care of your own body. It will take a concerted effort on your part to set time aside for yourself. Some people might say you are selfish for taking time away from other family members, but in the long run, you will be healthier, happier, and better able to help other members of your family.
Taking care of your own health is not easy but it should be a priority in your life. If you get sick, does everything around you fall apart? Do the children know how to get themselves up in the morning and off to school with a good breakfast in their stomachs? Can your elderly parents get along a few days without you dropping by? Can your husband manage the family and home while you are sick?
These might sound silly but when you are stuck in bed for a few days or even weeks, everything just might fall apart. You are needed by all of these people to help them with any number of different tasks. It is only by taking care of yourself and your health that you will be able to keep on.
It is easy to start taking better care of your own health. Start out small with incremental steps that will not disrupt your family’s routine. Maybe begin with an evening walk and take along the dog or invite your children—the goal is to get more exercise. Even 15 minutes is a start that is easily managed.
You can add on additional time for your evening walks. In fact, you might even find that the time spent walking can relax and refresh not only your mind but also your body and spirit. If the children join you, it can be a great opportunity to just listen to them and to enjoy their chatter all while giving yourself and them the opportunity to exercise without thinking about it as a chore.
